Chaplet for the Dead
The Chaplet of the Dead is similar to a standard Rosary, but instead of having 5 decades it only has 4 decades. It has introductory prayers followed by the 4 decades, similar in style to a rosary. The 5 single beads honor the 5 wounds of Christ during His Passion. The 40 beads making up the 4 decades honor the 40 hours that Our Lord spent in Limbo when he descended to the dead, preached the Gospel, and delivered the souls to heaven.
The chaplet was established by the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Suffrage in Nimes, France, and Pope Pius IX approved it in 1873. Each time the chaplet is recited a partial indulgence is granted for the souls in purgatory (note—general conditions for gaining indulgences apply.)
